If you’re enjoying a craft cup of coffee, that didn’t happen by accident. Somewhere a farmer cared about growing a quality product. An importer got it into the hands of a roaster, who developed a unique profile to bring out the salient flavor characteristics of that specific coffee. Finally, someone, whether it was a barista at your local cafe or you in your kitchen, carefully brewed the coffee to ensure a proper extraction. Coffee is a complicated, beautiful craft.
The Coffee Compass exists to help you navigate the world of craft coffee.
Who we are:
- Michael Butterworth is Director of Education at Quills Coffee. While teaching ESL in Istanbul for a couple of years Michael used most of his vacation time to cafe crawl around the European continent. After consuming some of the tastiest coffees in the world Michael couldn’t help but find a job in coffee upon returning to the States. Michael is an avid cyclist, a licensed Q Grader, and a frequent contributor to Fresh Cup Magazine. Michael and his wife Julie write about travel at Pilgrimaged.
- Darren Jennings is co-founder of the Coffee Compass, avid home brewer, home roaster when possible, developer of RoastWatch, and missing his friend Michael after having spent many years blogging and brewing together in Louisville, KY. He is a recent transplant to San Francisco, CA alongside his wife Brittany and their son Beren.
- Stephen Lee handles the technical back end that keeps this coffee blog running. In addition to SEO and web design, Stephen’s online ventures also include technology and gaming. But more than anything else, Stephen loves Jesus Christ and his beautiful wife Kendal.
