indonesia_rel98

Like in other countries, the past few years have seen specialty coffee picking up steam in my home country Indonesia. Below is an exploration of the scene based on my recent trip to Jakarta and Bali.

Killing time while my wife was pampered with a traditional Javanese massage, I stopped by Giyanti, a café/roastery in the nearby antiques district of Jakarta. …

Rachel Ray coffee

It’s always nice when someone pays for your coffee, especially if they’re a famous television personality. Rachel Ray recently popped into our favorite Houston café Blacksmith and bought everyone in the store a cup of coffee. Co-owner David Buehrer was on hand to take the large amount of cash from the celebrity chef, and pass on the news to some rather incredulous customers. No word on what drink Ray ordered.  Watch the video here, then check out our friends and sponsors Greenway Coffee, who supply Blacksmith’s coffee.

Populace Coffee Wants to Give You a Mahlkönig EK43

October 2, 2014 By Michael 2 Comments

Flight of Fancy
A lot of coffee nerds like to think they have a good palate. Populace Coffee wants to put them to the test. The Bay City-based roaster is teaming up with Mahlkönig and La Marzocco for a contest they’re dubbing the “Flight of Fancy.” And they are giving a Mahlkönig EK43 to the winner.

The contest is simple enough. First you purchase the “Flight of Fancy“- four unmarked half pound bags of coffee. The unmarked bags come with postcards describing eight different coffees, four of which are in the unmarked bags. Correctly identifying the four coffees and giving the sponsors a social media shout out could net you the hottest piece of hardware in specialty coffee. Think your tastes buds are up to the challenge? Act fast. The flights are only available for purchase until October 12.
